BART LAB’s Creative Contribution to MU Blue Night 2024: The Making of the MU Blue Whale Mascot

March 3, 2024 – BART LAB, under the aegis of Mahidol University’s Faculty of Engineering, has showcased its creative prowess and commitment by spearheading the creation of the MU Blue Whale. This emblematic figure not only served as the highlight of the MU Blue Night 2024 but also symbolized the core values and aspirations of the Mahidol community.

The Genesis of the MU Blue Whale

The concept of the MU Blue Whale as the official mascot for MU Blue Night emerged four years ago, in 2020. At that time, Prof. Prasit Watanapa, MD, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, endorsed the initiative to host the event, following a tradition passed on from Ramathibodi Hospital. The idea was introduced by the Siriraj Student Affairs Office, highlighting that the blue whale, the largest creature on Earth capable of traversing all seven continents, epitomized the themes of magnificence and goodwill. The choice of blue, resonating with Mahidol University’s theme, and the play on words between “whale” and “well” (denoting goodness) further reinforced its selection as the mascot. Prof. Prasit Watanapa embraced this concept, attributing to the blue whale characteristics of generosity and suitability as a mascot.

In collaboration with Assoc. Prof. Jackrit Suthakorn, then Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and founding director of BART LAB, created the Blue Whale balloon with a blend of imagination and a budget of around 80,000 baht. However, the unexpected outbreak of COVID-19 postponed the 2020 MU Blue Night, necessitating the storage of the balloon at BART LAB until its unveiling.

The MU Blue Whale: An Emblem of Grandeur and Benevolence

The MU Blue Whale was officially unveiled at the MU Blue Night 2024 at the iconic Mahidol Wittayanusorn building. The event was graced by notable figures, including Pol. Gen.Dr. Jongjate Aojanepong, President of the Mahidol Alumni Association, and Prof. Apichat Asavamongkolkul, MD, the current Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital. This momentous occasion underscored the MU Blue Whale’s representation of Mahidol University’s grandeur, kindness, and commitment to humanitarian aid.

This significant undertaking was realized through the concerted efforts of the university’s faculty, students, and especially the coordination by the Student Affairs Office, with notable contributions from Ms. Ei and Mr. Nipot. The MU Blue Whale symbolizes the ingenuity and cooperative spirit of the BART LAB team and the Faculty of Engineering, reflecting Mahidol University’s enduring principles and role in nurturing a supportive and united community.

The MU Blue Whale mascot, now a beacon of the spirit of Mahidol University, continues to inspire and remind us of our collective strength, ambitions, and limitless potential achievable through unity toward a shared vision. BART LAB is honored to have contributed to this meaningful emblem, enriching the legacy of Mahidol University and its community.
