Mahidol BME Holds Capstone Defense at Hua Hin with Graduate-Level Rigor and International Standards

Hua Hin, Thailand – April 28–30, 2025
The Department of Biomedical Engineering, Mahidol University, held the Final Defense for Capstone Design Projects of its 15th cohort of senior-year undergraduate students at Carapace Hotel Beach and Pool Resort. The event blended academic intensity with a scenic setting, delivering a graduate-level experience that challenged and empowered students.

More than 20 faculty examiners from diverse biomedical fields participated in the evaluations. Each student group delivered a 15-minute presentation followed by over 30 minutes of intensive Q&A—emulating an Oral Qualifying Exam or Ph.D. defense in top international institutions. The entire process was conducted 100% in English, highlighting the program’s global orientation and ABET accreditation.

Among the standout projects was a BART LAB-led Capstone on Pedicle Screw Insertion Planning and Real-Time Spine Surgical Guiding Robot, advised by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn, with team members Mono, Oat, and Mind receiving praise for their excellent performance.

In a show of cross-program synergy, Master’s students from the MD–M.Eng. dual-degree program and staff from Ramathibodi Hospital also attended to observe the undergraduate presentations, fostering a spirit of vertical integration in medical engineering education.

The event concluded with a celebratory dinner party to honor the students’ accomplishments and their readiness to contribute to global healthcare and medical technology sectors.
